Peace of Mind

Are you stressed? Studies have shown that one of the top three major stressors is money, providing for your family now and in the future. Yes work and investing.

Work itself is not sinful or evil; it is what happens at work that can be sinful, causing stress. For Christians who have stress at work, we encourage you to read the excellent paperback written by Doug Sherman and William Hendricks, Your Work Matters To God. They write, “God created mankind to be in need of a relationship with Him and with each other, in need of food, and in need of a home. God provided for all these needs. He provided a garden, and He required a man to do the corresponding work of cultivation…. work has always originated from God, as His assignment to us. You are God’s coworker…Work is not our enemy. Sin is our enemy…only Christ is adequate to deal with sin.”

God uses the evils we face, to make us like Jesus. Heb. 12:11, “All discipline…yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.” No matter how corrupt the employment is, you have a responsibility before God to live your life above reproach. You do not necessarily have to quit your job. Christians need to learn how to be Christlike at your job, no matter if you clean hotel rooms or are a surgeon. The workplace is a very strategic place for Christian influence.

It is your church leaders’ responsibility to equip believers to deal with sin in the workplace. Scripture tells them to teach believers how to be Disciples of Christ. Then the Disciples of Christ can take their faith into their workplaces. If your pastor has not preached on sharing your faith in the workplace, please purchase the above mentioned book and give it to your pastor. We will leave the work stressor topic to the experts, Sherman and Hendricks, so please consider reading the book and sharing it with other Christians. Let’s go on to the money part, the investing.

God gave mankind the work and also sufficiency to supply all his needs. So, God enables you to work, in order to make wealth. (Deut.8:18) Work and its benefits are a gift from God (Ecclesiastes 2:24, 3:12-13, 5:18-19).

There is no scripture that says you should be stressed over money. However there are plenty of passages that do talk about how you should have peace, contentment, patience, and righteousness (I Tim.6:6, Heb. 12:1-13, 2 Peter 2:18-21). In fact, Paul writes in Eph. 4:28 that believers must work in order to have excess, something to share with others.

Moderation is the key. If your lifestyle is not excessive, your needs and wants will less than your income, so you will have excess, which increases options and reduces stress. Scripture states that you are to lead a tranquil and quiet life, in godliness and dignity (I Tim. 2:1-2).

Which are your investment stressors: multiple investment scandals, wondering if multiple mutual funds in your portfolio are buying the same stocks, media suggesting you sell your stock and move to bonds, not understanding the risk in your portfolio, wondering whom to trust, or really knowing your true expenses?
